There are a lot of traditions that come with the holidays. One tradition is the New Year’s resolution.   There are several popular resolutions like losing weight which goes with the working out resolution, helping others, getting organized, getting out of debt, spending time with family, and quitting any bad habits.

My personal favorites are helping others and spending time with family.  There are so many ways that we can help one another.  We can help someone that is sick by bringing them a meal. We can give someone a ride that wouldn’t have a way otherwise. We can stop and talk with someone that has no one else.  That one kind word to a person can take them through the next day, month, or year.

Every year I watch my youngest son, who’s 10, learn what the holidays are really about.  One day as we headed to basketball practice he said to me, “Mom, I know what I want for Christmas this year.” So of course I asked him what he wanted. He said, “I just want my Bubba.” That warmed my heart to realize that my son now understands the meaning of holidays.  See his “Bubba”, my oldest son, is a US Marine stationed in California with his family.  Then I overheard him tell his six year old cousin that Christmas isn’t about gifts, it is about spending time with your family.  Well shouldn’t we want to spend more time with our family every day? We all have our busy lives and get wrapped up in the hustle and the bustle and before we know it our kids are grown and out of the house and we are left to ask ourselves where the time went.
